Breast Screening Unit Celebrates 30 years

In November 2019 the Kent &Canterbury Hospital Breast Screening Unit celebrated 30 years of breast screening in East Kent. The unit opened in 1989, a year after the NHS Breast Screening Programme was set up by the Dept of Health. The new building was officially re-opened in May 2003 and was named after Prof Stuart Field, who set up the service at Canterbury. Stuart is a past Chairman of the League and is still involved as a Vice President. The service is now fully digital thanks to the East Kent Mammography Appeal in 2011, to which the League of Friends contributed £240K towards the Canterbury machine. The complexity of the work has changed dramatically over the years and has significantly improved the experience and outcomes for patients
