The League of Friends held its annual Summer Fair at the Kent & Canterbury Hospital on Saturday 20th August 2016. Despite the forecast of wind and rain, a good crowd turned out and the fair again proved a resounding success. Together with the Grand Draw, the fair produced a record profit of £11,900.

Eight city and village groups participated with stands and many hospital departments manned stalls and entered into the spirit of the fundraising afternoon. There was also lively entertainment from the Wantsum Morris Dancers and plenty of activities for kids, of all ages, with a Punch and Judy show, and the chance to sit in a police car and on a special high powered motorbike used by the emergency blood transport service. The Lord Mayor of Canterbury, Councillor George Metcalfe, opened proceedings, then visited all the stalls and left with a variety of purchases and prizes. Canterbury Rotary Club organised the BBQ and Canterbury Inner Wheel provided a steady stream of customers with food and beverages.

Especially pleasing was the success of the Grand Draw. There were 33 prizes on offer with the top prize of £1,000 won by Mr Jenkins of Upstreet.

The Chairman of the League of Friends, Viv Pritchard, said “I am delighted with the success of the fair. The blustery weather was challenging but that did not dampen the spirits of the stallholders and the visitors. We all had a splendid fun day and the sun did appear later on. The important thing is that we managed to raise a lot of money. All the profits will go towards helping hospital departments to improve patient care. Our thanks go to all the volunteers and stall holders and to all the organisations who donated prizes for the Grand Draw.”
