Fundraising & FundingCity and Village Groups: When the League was founded in 1953 it was wisely decided that, as well as a Central Committee, City and Village Groups would be set up, each with its own Committee. Nine such groups were set up and now form the League's backbone, organising a variety of fundraising events such as coffee mornings, jumble sales, quiz nights, luncheons, fashion shows, etc. Local groups are to be found in Ash, Barham & Kingston, Bridge (Nailbourne), Canterbury South, Chartham, City Centre, Rough Common Harbledown & Blean, St.Stephens & Westgate and Sturry. Group members provide most of the large number of volunteers required for the activities detailed below, as well as raising considerable sums of money which the Group itself uses for Hospital gifting. The Joint Summer Fair is the major fundraising event of the year. The site is outside Out-Patients and the Hospital joins forces with the League to hold the Fair on the Saturday before August Bank Holiday weekend. There are many stalls run by the Groups, selling goods of all sorts, foods, raffles, games etc: there are entertainers, clowns, dancers and so on. Hospital departments and local businesses join us at this event. Used stamps, coins etc are collected. Legacies and gifts are particularly welcome and are dealt with on special forms available from the League Office.
